JOB TITLE: Chief Engineer

REPORTS TO: President & CEO




Ensures the KNPB production and broadcast infrastructure and physical plant utilizes current technology to the best of the station’s ability and financial resources. Responsible for leading and managing the engineering and IT departments and overseeing the budget for these areas. This position is a member of the executive team and reports directly to the CEO.


  • Provide effective leadership and oversight related to broadcast and maintenance engineering,  staff members
  • With approval from the CEO, set overall departmental goals and objectives for engineering and IT departments.  Responsible for participating in annual budgeting process related to these areas and accountable to run operations within the set budgets
  • Oversee procurement and installation of required equipment
  • Implement technical infrastructure and provide systems integration for present needs and provide on-going research and vision for future needs
  • Monitor broadcast operations for FCC compliance
  • Responsible for FCC license renewal, maintenance and integrity
  • Evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot discrepancy reports to improve problem areas and provide an error free on-air product
  • Coordinate with outsourced IT department 
  • Respond to viewers phone calls and e-mails regarding reception problems and other technical concerns
  • Provide oversight for the maintenance of the mechanical integrity of the broadcast systems, including the transmitter site and translators 
  • Manage and oversee data recovery procedures and operations 
  • Oversee studio productions and ensure studio capacities
  • Manage and maintain KNPB’s IT network and server platforms, and plan and implement improvements and upgrades to networks and computer systems as required (including web casting and all other emerging technologies)
  • Work as liaison with the Technology Committee of the Board of Trustees to establish work plans, replacement strategies and long term technology policy.
  • Oversee the maintenance and integrity of the station’s physical plant and grounds
  • Provide appropriate training and professional development opportunities and perform annual performance evaluations for staff members
  • Assist with preparation of grants as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered):

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or related field 
  • Minimum ten years of television experience in technologies or engineering field, including a minimum of five years leadership/management experience
  • Three to five years computer and network related systems management experience
  • Extensive understanding and knowledge of all FCC Broadcast requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to be on call in the event of emergency situations 
  • Grant preparation experience a plus
  • Should possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Nevada driver's license.
