JOB TITLE: Master Control Operator

REPORTS TO: Manager of Technology and Operations

DEPARTMENT: Technology  

PART-TIME POSITION: 4 to 20 hrs a week  

SUPERVISORY POSITION: No 

                                                                                                                          

JOB SUMMARY:

Sets up, controls and monitors television broadcasting equipment to transmit television programs and station breaks (interstitial material) to viewing audience by performing the following duties.
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Reads programming log and plays programming from appropriate sources on air as scheduled. 
  2. Maintains on air continuity while minimizing disruption of scheduled programming.
  3. Responsible for monitoring automation software, making adjustments when appropriate. 
  4. Operates master control switching equipment to send various programming elements (programs, interstitial material, station ID's, etc.) to viewers in the correct order on multiple channels simultaneously. 
  5. Monitors Emergency Alert System (EAS) broadcasts. In the case of an EAS alert, operator is responsible for rebroadcast of details to ensure public safety. 
  6. Records on programming log the actual time that program or interstitial material aired. 
  7. Monitor the transmitter to ensure operation within FCC and good operational practice guidelines.
  8. Observes on-air monitors to ascertain problems with transmissions such as loss of video or audio signals, and takes appropriate action to transmit “technical difficulties” messages. 
  9. Listens to on-air audio monitoring, and observes audio meters to ascertain proper audio operation.
  10. Uses video test equipment to adjust video and color levels to specifications.
  11. Responds to equipment failures in an appropriate and timely manner, calling in help when needed.
  12. Records programs according to the recording log. Responsible for quality control, accurate timing and logging of recorded programs, information and other materials.
  13. Ability to dub video and audio into a computerized video server and recall it as needed.
  14. Loads, records and plays videotapes in various kinds of professional videotape machines.
  15. Operate equipment to route video & audio to/from various destinations in the TV plant.
  16. Operates computer interfaces to control satellite receivers and other equipment.
  17. Prepare server automation play-list for playback of programming, station breaks and identification materials.
  18. Verifies voice over recordings and informs appropriate personnel of inconsistencies.
  19. Prepares email reports describing problems encountered during transmission of program or interstitial material, and the steps taken to correct the problem.
  20. Responsible for making dubs of programs per work orders.
  21. Building security. Opens main entrance at 8am and locks them at 5pm. Opens and locks main entrance for special events and community room use. 
  22. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to follow a program and recording log. 
  • Computer and basic electronic aptitude a must. 
  • Knowledge of MS Windows PC operating systems required, Mac OS X and Linux a plus. 
  • Ability to multi-task & problem solve at extremely high levels.
  • Must be able to pay strict attention to detail and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures, often under pressure. 
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma – some college or technical school preferred.
  • SBE TV Operator Certification a plus.
