1. Channel 5 Mission Statement
Channel 5’s mission is to enrich the lives of individuals and improve its community by focusing the power of media to advance education, culture, and citizenship.
2. From the front office…
KNPB’s new President & CEO Kliff Kuehl moved into the front office in December 2004.
Kliff and his family have settled into life in northern Nevada, and Kliff’s leadership has guided the station through phase two of the digital conversion and successful completion of the Capital Campaign to fund the changes. In Kliff’s words…
It has been a busy year here at Channel 5.
The KNPB team wrapped up the campaign for digital conversion (DTV), surpassing our six million dollar goal. KNPB and volunteer chairs John Sande and Phil Satre won national PBS awards for this successful digital funding effort.
KNPB has continued its leadership in developing digital services in our broadcast area. Viewers can look forward to a time of unrivaled consumer choice as new digital channels deliver customized content to individual customers. KNPB has continued to build digital infrastructure and soon will add content to this new digital world.
In addition to our HD channel, we have added interactive content to our website. Plans are to launch a third digital channel in early 2006 which will feature additional PBS programs and local productions. As we complete the conversion of our production facility to accommodate high definition, we will produce HD programming to showcase the beauty and history of our area.
New technology will open consumer pathways for civic engagement where we can share experiences and learn from each other, places where we can celebrate, debate, and reflect issues important to our community. We are developing programming produced in partnership with local non-profits, designed to shine a light on the people and activities of community groups in our broadcast area.
KNPB will be listening to discover additional ways to deliver verifiable benefits for Nevadans in this new digital world. While KNPB has a duty to contribute its ideas to the planning, we also know that questions of our future direction belong to all of us, not just to Channel 5. KNPB is fortunate to serve such a supportive and involved community. We look forward to working together to add even more benefits for our community in the coming years.

5. Education and Outreach Services
KNPB’s education and outreach activities extend the value of programming into the classroom and the community. Professional development for teachers and opportunities for adults to discuss important issues ensure that program services are not confined to a broadcast schedule.
PBS TeacherLine offers a wide selection of online graduate courses for teacher professional development.
The statewide National Educational Technology Leadership Conference presents cutting edge best practices by Nevada educators.
Channel 5’s 2005 outreach theme, “Youth in Crisis,” guided the content for discussion groups, Open Line on-air panels, and a KNPB category of competition for institutional spots as part of the Lumiere Film Festival for young filmmakers.
Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest featured the works of young writers ages 5 to 8.
Ready To Learn activities included 91 workshops for parents and in-service presentations for caregivers of young children, as well as distribution of more than 1,000 books to at-risk children.
PBS Kids Go: “Discovering the Oasis” combines programming, education, and outreach activities to focus on the beauty and the environmental importance of the Truckee River.
6. Local Production
During the past year, KNPB completed shooting on the fourth season of Wild Nevada and began shooting on the second season of House with a History.
The 2005 Telly Awards were awarded to House with a History, Nevada Experience: The Great War and Nevada Experience: Adolph Sutro.
Capital Issues 2005, co-produced weekly with KLVX/Las Vegas, aired recaps of the work of the 2005 Nevada Legislature statewide.
Online at knpb.org, we launched KNPB Interactive, a feature rich site with streaming audio and video clips.
7. Technology & Digital Television
The Technology Department has been buying and installing digital equipment for the Master Control area of the station using the CPB Digital Distribution Fund grant and a federal grant received in 2004. This new digital equipment replaces a large portion of the original analog Master Control equipment purchased when the station was first built over 22 years ago.
This new equipment will allow “multicasting,” control of multiple steams of programming on the new digital TV channel.
KNPB is doing the journeymen work of transforming the core technical facilities of the station to a complete digital plant using existing Technology staff. This will ensure quality workmanship that is well designed for the current and future needs of the community we serve.
Our DTV viewership has grown with the carriage of our High Definition programming available on Charter Communications digital cable.
Engineer Charlie Anderson was honored with a lifetime achievement Emmy award for his role in development of the video tape recorder.
8. Major Donors
KNPB Major Donor programs offer a variety of opportunities for members to support Channel 5’s long-term financial health. These higher levels of support represent investment in the continuation of the programs and activities which address KNPB’s mission to inform, enlighten, and entertain our community.
KNPB Silver Circle members invest annually in KNPB at levels of $1,000 or more. Recognized at special friends of Channel 5, these investors are encouraged to participate in station events and activities.
Channel 5 members may support the long-term financial viability of the station through contributions to the Heritage Society or the Joan S. Bradley Endowment fund. Planned charitable giving to either of these funds can be as simple as including a bequest in a will or developing an annual giving plan that provides tax benefits to the donor.
Most significant major giving activity in 2005 was successful completion of the Defining 5 Capital Campaign to fund KNPB’s conversion to digital television. Contributions surpassed the $6 million goal, earning PBS Development awards for both the station and the chairs of the campaign John Sande III and Phil Satre.
9. Development
Besides Major Donor programs, KNPB’s development staff manage a variety of fund-raising activities which combine to keep the station financially sound. This diversity of funding sources supports all aspects of Channel 5 services, from production and programming to education and outreach.
Some 7,500 individual members support Channel 5, providing the largest single source of income to the station. Pledge drives in March, August, and December offer local viewers the opportunity to support the station at whatever level fits each budget, and mail campaigns reach out to renewing members and those who wish to contribute additional gifts.
Local businesses and foundations also support KNPB, usually through underwriting broadcast programs or through grants to station projects such as Ready To Learn. Corporate support is acknowledged on-air, in Take 5, and in other print promotional pieces. Many Channel 5 underwriters have been supporting the station since its inception in 1983.
"Lights! Camera! Auction!" in June and "Aged To Perfection" in November invite viewers to bid on a wide variety of items from appliances to travel packages, fine wine to art pieces. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2005, the auction attracts some 700 volunteers who answer phones, serve food, and crew the technical staff.
10. Channel 5 Stars
