The British gave Rodin his last important monument commission. As the new president of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers, Rodin was to design a monument to Whistler, their former president. A public subscription was opened in 1906 but Rodin's work did not progress rapidly. With rumors that Rodin planned to exhibit his Whistler monument at the 1908 Salon, the Society wanted photographs, having just informed him that the money had been raised for the sculpture. What Rodin showed was an over life-size figure of enormous power with her left leg raised high and the knee pivoting to the left in a compelling but awkward pose. She was Whistler's muse, based on Rodin's work with a Welsh painter/model Gwen John. Although the English committee was dismayed, the statue got tremendous reviews in Paris. They especially admired the back. Although the 1908 figure was draped below the waist, Rodin apparently continued to work on the statue. Now seventy years old, Rodin was frequently distracted and ultimately unable to complete the commission.
