Researchers from West Virginia University will be visiting KNPB on Wednesday, October 24 for a free public screening of a new documentary film, “Backfired: When VW Lied to America.” The researchers, who helped uncover the scandal, will take part in a live Q&A after the film along with University of Nevada, Reno's Vice President of Research and Innovation Dr. Mridul Gautam, who was the team members’ masters and doctorate advisor, and worked with the team.

- Dr. Arvind Thiruvengadam: Assistant Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; West Virginia University. Ranked #2 on Motor Trend Magazine’s annual Power List.
- Dr. March Besch: Research Assistant Professor, Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; West Virginia University.
- Dr. Mridul Gautam: Vice President for Research and Innovation and Professor of Mechanical Engineering: University of Nevada, Reno.
The researchers, working in a lab created by Dr. Gautam, were studying why vehicles gave off higher emissions in Europe than in the United States. Their study led to the discovery of “defeat devices” used by VW to alter emission test results to avoid California and U.S. vehicle emission standards.
