What is digital television?

Digital television is transmitted using a similar digital technology as that of computers. You will notice that digital television dramatically improves the quality of the television picture and sound. Digital television signals are also compressed, making it possible to broadcast several channels simultaneously.

Is High Definition television the same as digital television?
No! Programs broadcast at the highest level of quality are referred to as high definition, so your digital TV set will need to be “HD ready” if you’re to see these beautiful pictures.

What is Standard Definition television?
Standard Definition television is digital television that requires a lower level digital TV set than HD. The pictures and sound are still beautiful, but not as breathtakingly beautiful as those of HD.

What is multicasting?
Digital technology allows KNPB to broadcast several channels at once. We call that “multicasting” because we are broadcasting “multiple” channels simultaneously. Our digital channels, KNPB, KNPB II, and KNPB HD reflect this new capacity to bring you three times the programs as before.

Will I have to buy a new TV set?
No, you can still use your old “analog” TV set, but after February 17, 2009, you’ll need a special converter box to receive the new digital signal and alter it for your old set. Discount coupons are available from the U.S. government, making these boxes quite affordable. Visit ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon or call toll-free 888-DTV-2009.

Keep in mind, however, that your older analog television set will not display digital programming with the clarity and quality of an up-to-date digital set. To experience the full benefit of DTV, you will need a new digital television set.

What if I have cable or satellite service?
You probably won’t need to do anything different. However, there will most likely be additional fees to receive KNPB HD and some other KNPB digital channels.

How much does a digital TV cost? Do you have any tips for shopping?
Prices for digital television sets continue to drop. Cost varies widely depending on size, whether the set is HD ready, and other options. Be sure the set you buy has a digital tuner. Shop carefully and speak with a well-informed sales person.

How will I know what’s on?
KNPB’s current breaks between programs during primetime include a “billboard” listing current programming on KNPB, KNPB II, and KNPB HD. We are adding program listings for all our channels in our Program Guide, and you can find program listings on our website at knpb.org. If you subscribe to cable or satellite service, your on-air listing should show all KNPB channels that are availalbe to you.
