PBS Literacy Link is an adult education research and development project funded by a US Department of Education grant to PBS. Channel 5 is one of five stations across the nation to act as a testbed site for the resources developed within the project. Nevada Literacy Link sites are located at adult learning centers in Reno, Sun Valley, Carson City, Fallon, and Lovelock. The products include a new GED on TV series in production at Kentucky Educational Television and designed for use with the revised GED test due out in fall 2001. Workplace Essential Skills is the first finished product of the PBS Literacy Link project. Designed to help adult learners at the pre-GED level improve their employability in the workplace, the television programs take the viewer inside today's high tech workplace for a look at how people acquire and use basic skills to meet everyday on-the-job challenges. Real problems, such as negativity, demanding customers and less than helpful supervisors are addressed. The technology-based package includes 24 half-hour instructional episodes, an orientation program, student workbooks (4 books per set), and an extensive teacher's guide. Online lessons, assessment resources, and a student information management system are also available. Besides an orientation program, the curriculum includes the a series of lessons.
