MATERIALS

  • Attachment 1: Weaving activity
    Woven basket or photos of woven baskets
  • Raw pine nuts
  • M&Ms
  • Paper plates
  • Charcoal briquettes
  • Per group of four:
    newspaper, food coloring, bowls
    (for dye), yarn, large bowl, scissors, needlepoint needle, six yards of clothesline per basket

    learn a craft? An art?
  • How long has it taken you to learn
    to do something new?

Post-Viewing Activities

Weaving activity. (See Attachment 1.)
Discuss how arts/crafts, stories and traditions are passed down from one generation to another.

Extensions
  • Field trip to Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    One hour tour for groups of 20. Indian artifacts, rocks and minerals, native animals, early mining equipment and a simulated mine. Call Denise at 687-4810.
  • Research the ways Native Americans used pine nuts in their recipes and diets.
  • Research the art of basketry in various cultures.
