NEVADA'S DIVERSE HERITAGE

Grades 4-6
Way of the Willow, Basque Hotels, To Honor the Holy Ghost

Pre-Viewing Activity

Many cultures have contributed to Nevada's unique Heritage. When groups emigrated to America they Brought customs and adapted them to the region. Find the Azores on the world map. The group of People we are now looking at is from this region.

Focus For Viewing

To give students a specific responsibility while viewing, tell them there were several job opportunities for Portuguese immigrants in America. Ask them to raise their hands when they hear one: (whaling, California gold, Nevada mining, sheep and cattle herding).

Post-Viewing Activities

Review reasons for immigrations to the Americas. Discuss problems facing people immigrating to a new country. Have the students decide what traditions and customs they would keep if they emigrated to a foreign country or to a space station in outer space. Have them write and share their ideas in small groups. Tally which customs and traditions are the most popular for the class. Compare findings with other classes.

Extensions
  • Plan a school-wide dinner. It could be a celebration of cultural diversity or a celebration of learning in other content areas: Family Math Night, Reading Week, etc.
  • Write to classes in Lovelock, Fallon, or Yerington asking about the festivals. (See Attachment 3 for addresses.)
  • Talk with students about how other holidays and customs have originated. Study traditions and symbols of other widely celebrated American holidays, such as St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Santa Lucia Day, Halloween, etc.
