    Attachment 1: Cluster sheets
    For stereotypes and prejudices
    Attachment 2: "T" diagram sheets
  • per class:
    large butcher paper
    (for class "T" diagram)

Focus for Viewing

To give students a specific responsibility while viewing, instruct them to take notes on The Black Experience in Nevada in both the past and the present..

Pre-Viewing Activity

As a class, discuss the term of prejudice. Discussion questions (list answers, examples on the board):

  • Define prejudice.
  • Define discrimination.
  • Define stereotypes.
  • Define segregation.
  • Define integration.
  • What does "separate but equal" mean?
  • What does it mean to be circumscribed?

Grades 9-12
Comparing the Black Experience: Then and Now

Objectives

Students will:

  • Become aware of the contributions of black people in Nevada.
  • Understand the obstacles and prejudices and discrimination encountered by blacks in Nevada.
  • Cluster and share the stereotyping of prejudice toward and discrimination against a culture.
  • Complete a "T" diagram, Black Experience: Then and Now.
  • Share and discuss "T" diagram information.
  • Project how the Black Experience will change by the year 2010.

Post-Viewing Activities

Discussion questions:

  • How do you feel about the activities of the Nevada Ku Klux Klan?
  • Why did the Las Vegas mayor and downtown businesses finally agree to integrate? .Do you think the NAACP exerted enough influence?
  • Why was the Nevada Legislature "scared" to put anything about equal rights into law?
  • Did the 1965 Civil Rights Law solve all of the problems for African Americans in Nevada? Explain.
  • What changes/issues still need to be addressed?
  • Which other races benefited from Equal Rights Legislation?
  • How are stereotypes still impacting minorities? What can you do to change that?

Distribute copies of Attachment 2: "T" diagram sheets (Black Experience: Then and Now). Have students complete the diagram individually.

When each student has completed their diagram, divide student into groups to compare their "T" diagrams. As a whole class, complete a large "T" diagram on chart paper and discuss student group results.

Project the changes in the black experience in Nevada by the year 2010.

Extensions

(Include your own projects.)

  • Bring in guest speaker.
  • Draft a petition to promote equality.
  • Write a poem about the issues in the video. Share with the class.
  • Draw a comparative political cartoon using your "T" diagram.
  • Design a cultural activity that transcends color and focuses on the person.
