A controversial
figure in Nevada's Political and economic history. George Wingfield
associated with state power Brokers and became one himself.
Never Elected
to public office, Wingfield gained Wealth and power through gambling
and mining ventures. During the depression, amid charges of corruption
and manipulation, Wingfield's twelve banks failed, seriously impacting
Nevada.
He later made
s second fortune from the Getchel Mine. A major player in union
busting activities in the mining
Students will:
- Obtain
biographical information on George Wingfield;
- Understand
how one person can have great impact and influence;
- Take factual
data and reinterpret it in a creative format;
- Illustrate
and annotate a mini-mural (crown) using five events from Wingfield's
life.
To give students
a specific responsibility while viewing, instruct them to take
notes on the major events in George Wingfield's life for later
reference
As a class,
discuss the concept of power. Discussion questions:

the project guidelines and grading sheet to each student.

Review
the following instructions with the class:
Your assignment is to turn a crown into an annotated mural.
On the outside of each crown point, you are to illustrate
an event from George Wingfield's life. On the back you will
annotate or write a description of he event. Choose any five
events from your notes. Decorate and color the crown. Cut
it out when finished. Attach a paper strip so you can wear
the crown.
(Include
your own projects.)

students look at each other's murals and try to guess which
event the illustrations represent.

will draw and caption a cartoon about one aspect of Wingfield's
life, write a eulogy for Wingfield, or create a timeline
of his life.
