Ready To Learn: Literacy Projects

KNPB's "Ready To Learn" Service offers a variety of literacy programs for children and families including First Books, PBS Families and para la Familia newsletters, the Ready Teddy Times newsletter, Barnes & Noble Storytime, partnerships with community organizations, the Washoe County School District and classrooms and the new "Family Storyteller" workshop.

First Books:
For the many families who have not made reading a regular part of their lives, television can be a path that leads to books. First Book unites the power of television with the magic of books to introduce families to the joy of reading.

In collaboration with community partners, we distribute over 3,600 high-quality children's books annually to families who might not otherwise have access them, enabling them to build a home library of selected children's literature.

PBS Families/para la Familia newsletters:
As part of our Ready To Learn service we distribute over 8,000 copies annually of the PBS Families and Spanish version, para la Familia newsletter to children and famlies in northern Nevada and northeastern California. The newsletter is published twice a year and is free.

The newsletter contains a variety of fun games and activities for children, as well as parenting tips. Request a copy.

Ready Teddy Times newsletter/Ready Teddy Learner:
Channel 5 publishes its own bi-monthly newsletter, the Ready Teddy Times. Ready Teddy Learner is Channel 5's mascot for our "Ready To Learn" service. He's a lovable hugable bear. He travels around to schools and child care centers carrying the message to children to become "Ready To Learn" by reading books and doing activities. He is seen in animation on Channel 5's on air between program messages and on the Masthead for the Ready Teddy Times.

Ready Teddy Times carries this same theme. It is designed for parents and children to let them know about programs and services available to them at Channel 5. Members of KNPB's Birthday Club receive their bi-monthly copies as part of their membership benefits. Other partners of Channel 5's Ready To Learn service also receive copies. Request a copy.

Barnes & Noble Storytime:
Channel 5 hosts a Storytime for preschool children twice a month at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 5555 S. Virginia St. in Reno. Storytime is held the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 10am in the children's department.

We show a brief video presentation from one of our children's series such as Barney, Between The Lions, Clifford, Caillou or Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Then we read stories to the children based on the story from the video presentation, do a small activity and send home handout with the parents. Join us!

Literacy Partnerships:
Channel 5 has generated numerous partnerships within our community to promote literacy for children and families.

Literacy based programs are supported by Channel 5 through the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, the Reno Housing Authority, the Carson City Library, the Fernley Friends of the Library, and the Washoe County Library System.

In addition, KNPB partners with Washoe County School District's Read & Succeed program and through several classroom programs at Smithridge Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary schools. The First Book program has been integrated into all these projects.

Channel 5 also has an extensive partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno's Cooperative Extension office. "The Family Storyteller" project is a series of six workshops for parents utilizing video and books. Workshops can be scheduled through the UNR Cooperative Extension Office at 784-4848.
