KNPB's "Ready To Learn" Service offers a variety of literacy programs for children and families including First Books, PBS Families and para la Familia newsletters, the Ready Teddy Times newsletter, Barnes & Noble Storytime, partnerships with community organizations, the Washoe County School District and classrooms and the new "Family Storyteller" workshop. First
Books: In collaboration with community partners, we distribute over 3,600 high-quality children's books annually to families who might not otherwise have access them, enabling them to build a home library of selected children's literature. PBS
Families/para la Familia newsletters: The newsletter contains a variety of fun games and activities for children, as well as parenting tips. Request a copy. Ready
Teddy Times newsletter/Ready Teddy Learner: Ready Teddy Times carries this same theme. It is designed for parents and children to let them know about programs and services available to them at Channel 5. Members of KNPB's Birthday Club receive their bi-monthly copies as part of their membership benefits. Other partners of Channel 5's Ready To Learn service also receive copies. Request a copy. Barnes
& Noble Storytime: We show a brief video presentation from one of our children's series such as Barney, Between The Lions, Clifford, Caillou or Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Then we read stories to the children based on the story from the video presentation, do a small activity and send home handout with the parents. Join us! Literacy
Partnerships: Literacy based programs are supported by Channel 5 through the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, the Reno Housing Authority, the Carson City Library, the Fernley Friends of the Library, and the Washoe County Library System. In addition, KNPB partners with Washoe County School District's Read & Succeed program and through several classroom programs at Smithridge Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary schools. The First Book program has been integrated into all these projects. Channel 5 also has an extensive partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno's Cooperative Extension office. "The Family Storyteller" project is a series of six workshops for parents utilizing video and books. Workshops can be scheduled through the UNR Cooperative Extension Office at 784-4848. For
