Children from kindergarten to third grade are encouraged to write and illustrate their own stories and enter them in the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. These stories are judged locally and the winners submitted to the national contest.
Local judges selected winners in each grade level. The first place winner, in each grade level, was sent to the national competition. All local winners were invited to a special reception at KNPB Public Broadcasting.
Their stories are recognized on-air and on KNPB Online. All children entering the contest receive a signed Certificate of Achievement from the host of Reading Rainbow LeVar Burton.
