HOUSE WITH A HISTORY Press Contact: Jack Kelly, KNPB 775-784-4555 jack@knpb.org www.knpb.org/pressroom/ Host Information • Marla Carr Marla Carr (host/writer of HOUSE WITH A HISTORY) is an award-winning photographer and writer. Her photographs have appeared in Nevada Magazine, Comstock's Business Magazine and the Wild Nevada television series. Before turning to the arts, Ms. Carr worked as a fundraising professional for PBS. Marla was born in Ohio. She moved from the Midwest to Reno in 1999, and was instantly intrigued with Nevada and the West with which she was totally unfamiliar. In 2004, she was hired as the host/writer for a new public television series, HOUSE WITH A HISTORY, produced by KNPB Public Broadcasting in Reno, Nevada. The series explores the cultural and architectural history of Nevada through its historic houses. Marla describes HOUSE WITH A HISTORY has a collaboration of several elements. Foremost is the house -- it's architecture and the intent of the original owners. Next is the time frame in which the house was built -- the political and social fabric of the city, of the nation during the eighteen hundreds, or the 1930s, 40s, whatever. Giving voice to the story of the house and its history are the personalities that come into play. The senator, the starlet, or the gangster who built it. The architect whose design reflected a trend, or created a fashion. The present-day owners who have given the community the gift of preservation. They add dimension and a human element to the story. The houses provide a wonderful entree into the character of the community; it's history, and some fascinating individuals. The series should also emphasize the importance of preserving the past. Marla has a BA in Theatre Performance from Kent State University and has completed course work towards a Masters Degree in Theatre/Film Criticism from the University of Kansas. In addition to her work on HOUSE WITH A HISTORY, Marla is an accomplished still photographer and has worked as a freelance theatre writer for the Reno Gazette Journal. She has received numerous awards from the Nevada Magazine annual photo contest, and has published in Nevada Magazine and Encore. She frequently travels as a staff photographer for KNPB-TV's Wild Nevada series. ####
