Health threats in Nevada range from a need for more emergency care, to areas in health where we rank unusually high like stroke, cardiac disease, asthma and teen suicide.

What are the specific risks and what steps are we taking in this state to make is healthier for those who live here?

Join Erin Breen and a panel of experts to talk about public health, the situation in the state, what needs to be done to address the problems we have and a look inside the School of Medicine at UNR and how it fits into the plan. And then take a look at two of the many innovative centers recently opened to address some of our biggest health problems here

Our Guests:

Dr. John A. McDonald is the Dean of the University’s School of Medicine. He has been with the School of Medicine for about 2 years now and comes to Nevada from Salt Lake City where he was the Chief of Medicine at the V.A. Medical Center. He has a Master’s, a Ph.D and a good perspective on national trends on clinical work and research as well as a good look at the local picture.

Dr. Manuel Bayona is the Director of UNR’s School of Public Health. He is from Mexico City, Mexico and has studied in his country, our country and abroad. Dr. Bayona has also worked internationally in the field of public health and brings a global perspective to the problems here in Nevada and how they fit in to the health situation world wide.

Dr. Mary Anderson, Washoe District Health Officer, was a member of one of the earliest classes of the University of Nevada’s School of Medicine. After graduation she had a notable career in the U.S. Navy, where her assignments included being a flight surgeon and primary healthcare provider for aviators. She also served as the Navy’s equivalent of a state epidemiologist in Norfolk Virginia.

She has come home to Nevada and is now serving as a Washoe County District Health Officer.

Clark Dumont is the Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs for the Nevada Cancer Institute. He has more than 3 decades of communications and public affairs experience and more than 2 decades of experience in healthcare.

Before working the Nevada Cancer Institute Dumont was director of Regional Voirporate Communications for Wellpoint, Inc. serving more than 2.8 million Blue Cross and Blue Shield members in Connecticut, Maine and New Hampshire. He earned his undergraduate degree in Communications from American University in Washington DC.

Dr. Paul Katz is the Medical Director of the Washoe Comprehensive Stroke Center which is under the umbrella of the Washoe Institute for Neurosciences. Dr. Katz comes from the Department of Neurology at the Montefiore Medical Center / Albert Einstein college of Medicine in New York where he was chief of Neurology and Director of the stroke service there. He served his residency in Neurology with Boston University Medical Center. He has taken participated in many clinical trials for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke.
