Frank Deford
Frank Deford is a social commentator, an avid sports fan and a prolific author. He has penned 14 books to date on topics more often relating to sports and the American culture of competition than anything else. But he has also shared his personal experiences of losing a young child to cystic fibrosis, in Alex: The Life of a Child, which was made into a movie in the 1980’s.

He enjoys writing for the joy of writing and has been able to wrap that into his fascination with sports. As the Senior Contributing Editor for Sports Illustrated he has seen the trends in Sports writing and sports reporting over the years. He has seen the journalistic values change as the sports themselves have changed.

He currently writes for Sports Illustrated, and is seen on CNN, he offers weekly commentaries on National Public Radio and seems always to be working on his next book and his next project.

Deford has won the National Magazine Award for profiles, for his story on Bill Russell…He has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters…and he has been voted as sportswriter of the year 6 times by his peers.

In addition for 15 years he has served as national chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and is currently chairman emeritus.
