After a stint in the military during the early to mid 1940s, Ludwig in 1947 debuted in New York at The Playhouse, portraying Ambrose in Miracle in the Mountains. Ludwig studied the Stanislavsky Method at The Actors Studio with Robert Lewis and Tamara Daykarhanova, herself a student of Stanislavsky. During his career he achieved a rare feat for an actor, working with both Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg.

Ludwig continues to contribute to the art as an acting teacher and is recording a number of his acting classes for an instructional video.
