The
Riverside is a story about a modern-day barn raising. It is the story
of preservationists and dreamers. It is the story of urban restoration
and renewal. And it is the story of a creative incubator where artists
and their families take charge of their careers.
The
Riverside is a one-hour television documentary that explores the complex
yet compelling venture to remake the historic Riverside Hotel into work/living
spaces for Reno artists. The documentary covers almost two years, from
the initial press announcement in November 1999 through the official grand
opening in September 2001.
Through a series of
vignettes, the documentary traces the renovation process, explores the
themes of urban renewal through the arts, and captures both the tension
and excitement behind the creation of the artists lofts. The program travels
to Minneapolis to meet the staff of Artspace and to Seattle to glimpse
the effects of success. Transforming the historic Riverside Hotel into
the home for both Sierra Arts Foundation and Reno artists is a remarkable
story told through the words and actions of those involved.
Principal
funding for this program by US Bank, the Gannett Foundation and the Reno
Gazette-Journal, with additional funding from the City of Reno Arts and
Culture Commission.
