The
Trip:
This trip takes us from Boulder City, to a raft trip down a stretch
of the Colorado River, and on a drive through the Lake Mead Recreation
Area to Overton, about 90 miles to the north. Day two of our journey
includes a visit to the Valley of Fire State Park and some sight-seeing
at the Lost City Museum.
Our
first day's adventure begins in Boulder City, Nevada, where we meet
up with our hosts for the raft trip, the Black
Canyon River Raft Tours. After a short bus ride to the base of Hoover
Dam, we set out on our float trip through the Black Canyon. The three
hour raft trip included breath-taking views, a picnic lunch, and plenty
of opportunities to get wet.
At
the end of the raft trip, we are bused back to Boulder City and our
van. We head north out of Boulder City on Lakeshore Road, State Route166.
We then take State Route 167 through the Lake Mead Recreation Area and
into Overton, our stopping point for the evening. Along the way, we
take the time to stop at the Redstone Picinic Area and enjoy a spectacular
desert sunset.
Our
second day finds us heading west out of Overton about 15 miles to the
Valley of Fire State Park. The incredible red sandstone rock formations
and awesome desert views of the park make it a great place to hike and
explore. We meet up with archaeologist Eva Jenson who explains some
of the area's many petrogylphs.
Eva also joins us back in Overton at the Lost City Museum, which offers
displays of Anasazi
artifacts and history.
