Description:
William Bartholomew returns from the Civil War battlefields to New
York City a hardened man bent on reversing his fortunes. Disfigured
by enemy fire, he chooses to wear a mask in his postwar life as a New
York financial speculator. Bartholomew prowls the city among slum dwellers,
thieves, and murderers. He becomes involved with Jessie, a Creole prostitute,
and he befriends Herman Melville, who is working as a deputy inspector
of customs his success as a writer short-lived.
