The Nevada Experience

The Nevada Experience #901: "Boulder City"
(Producer: Dave Santina; Length: 25:31; First broadcast: July 19, 1999)

In the midst of the Great Depression, a massive construction project began in the heat of the southern Nevada desert. Under a cloud of suffering and desperation an entire city rose, literally from the ground up, as part of the government's project to control the Colorado River.

Here is the story of the town known to many as the gateway to Hoover Dam. Historians and witnesses describe the creation and transformation of a community designed and controlled by the Bureau of Reclamation as a temporary city, one which survived a planned destruction and a tumultuous breakup with the government on the road to independence.

"Boulder City" presents a chronicle of the town which is known to most as the only place in Nevada without gambling, but is more deserving of notice for it's history.

The Nevada Experience #902: "The Lincoln Highway"
(Producer: Rosemary McCarthy; Total length: 25:31; First broadcast: May 12, 1999)

"The Lincoln Highway" in Nevada recounts the building of the Nevada section of the nation's earliest and most celebrated transcontinental highway.

The Lincoln Highway Association boasted in 1916 that motorists could speed over the road on a "journey which is made coast to coast in twenty days with nothing but enjoyment from one end to the other". Actually road conditions were a bit trying, especially in the West, particularly in Nevada. Engineering and political roadblocks plagued the Nevada section for years.

The Lincoln Highway in Nevada travels the old road across the state while road experts and historians discuss the political, economic, and social impact of the "Coast to Coast Highway."

The Nevada Experience #903: "Grant Sawyer: The Courage of his Convictions"
(Producer: Bill Martin; Total length: 24:21; First broadcast: May 19, 1999)

During the two terms that Grant Sawyer served as Nevada's 21st Governor, the state's status as "The Mississippi of the West" finally began to crumble. Sawyer's determination and leadership brought Civil Rights to the forefront in Nevada and resulted in significant change.

"In Grant Sawyer: The Courage of His Convictions", family members, political associates, historians and civil rights leaders recall Sawyer's drive to stand up for what he thought was right. This is the story of a man of conscience who was able to alter the social momentum of a growing state.
