Program Summary:
Arthur is an animated series that airs weekdays on KNPB at 4:30pm, based on the popular Arthur books by author/illustrator Marc Brown. Arthur follows the adventures and misadventures of eight year-old Arthur Read, his little sister, D.W., his friends and family. Aimed at viewers between the ages of four and eight, Arthur's goal is to help foster an interest in reading and writing, and to encourage positive social skills.
Meet the Characters:
-
Arthur is the star of the show. His full name is Arthur Timothy Read, and every child can relate to his frustrations, hopes, successes, and failures. The most important thing about Arthur is that he actively explores the world around him.
-
Buster Baxter is Arthur's best friend. He's a sociable kid who loves eating and telling jokes, and has a hard time motivating himself to do homework. He is an only child who lives with his mother, Bitzi. Buster has asthma, but it doesn't stop him from being active.
-
D.W. (short for Dora Winifred) is Arthur's little sister. She's precocious, independent, and a little dramatic. While she loves to bug Arthur, she is also very loyal to him.
-
Francine is an explorer and a doer. She's sometimes overly confident and competitive, but she is a good and loyal friend. She loves sports and playing drums. Unlike her best friend, Muffy, Francine's family is of modest means.
Available Workshops:
- Feelings:
Goals of this workshop include exploring the wide array of emotions young children experience that they may not be able to name. Through modeling and illustration children will become aware of different facial expressions and how to label emotions. Participants will also learn how to use the "Learning Triangle."
- Helping Hand:
Goals of this workshop include discussing ways children can be helpful. Helping others gives children a sense of responsibility and pride. During this workshop we will brainstorm ideas about helping, discuss how we can help, and create a storyboard about helping. Participants will also learn how to use the "Learning Triangle."
- Making Up
(Conflict Resolution):
Goals of this workshop include exploring the ways in which young children can use conflict resolution to diffuse arguments. We will discuss ways that friends can "make up" after hurting each other's feelings. Participants will also learn how to use the "Learning Triangle."
- Special Friends:
Goals of this workshop include familiarizing children with disabilities, as to demystify myths concerning different handicaps. Children will participate in activities without the use of all of their senses. This workshop encourages children and parents to think about how some function without sight, sound, or touch. Participants will also learn how to use the "Learning Triangle."
