Program Summary:
As they accompany Snook and his pals on adventures and investigations in the World Tree, kids will experience science, not as just a collection of facts, but as an exciting process of discovery. Viewers will see characters who are excited about science, who look for answers to the scientific puzzles they encounter, and who follow the steps and methods of scientific investigation. Through the stories of individual characters, kids will learn about different animals — how they live, grow, and change. The series will also introduce children to geography, providing them with a basic understanding that the world is bigger than their immediate surroundings and a sense that they are an important part of a larger community.
It's A Big, Big World airs weekdays on KNPB at 9:30am.
Meet the Characters:
-
Snook An energetic, giant, dancing sloth, Snook is dedicated to protecting, helping and caring for his friends and learning all about the 'Big Big World' around him. He may be slow, but he's a big thinker with big thoughts and a fascination for science. Enthusiastic and observant, he's a natural investigator, and when the monkeys and the other young characters rouse him with a question or a problem, he goes from sloth to sleuth in one wag of the tail. Snook has a warm clumsiness about him and he loves to sing and dance with his friends.
-
Smooch & Winslow are two playful sibling monkeys (marmosets to be exact) who are always hanging around - and on - Snook. They get in everyone else's hair, cause turmoil and constantly wake up Snook, often quarreling with each other along the way. But their little disputes frequently initiate great investigations. Smooch, the girl monkey, is the scientist of the pair, who's always trying to figure out the mysteries of the world around her. Winslow is the goofy, creative thinker, with wild explanations for any phenomenon they might encounter. Instead of just accepting her brother's outlandish theories, Smooch is the one who will figure out how to prove they're true...or not.
-
Bob the Anteater has a complicated relationship with the ants that live all around them in the World Tree. In fact, he is in love with them, but his earnest enthrallment makes the ants very nervous. Bob is overwhelmed pretty much all of the time, and he is constantly spinning out worst case scenarios. If it's raining, what if it never stops? Will everyone have to live underwater? Or if you've grown a bit, what if you just keep growing until you're a giant who doesn't fit anywhere?
-
Burdette, the bird, is the classic "bossy older sister," who always assumes she knows more than everyone around her, and yet is sometimes surprised to learn things herself (for instance, flying isn't a talent but an ability). Still, if Burdette is your friend, she's your friend for life. She's steadfast, earnest, protective and motherly in the way that only a person who's a little older than you can be.
Madge, a turtle, is the incarnation of knowledge and nurturing as she watches over all the creatures in the jungle with her wise, bespectacled eyes. She's been all over the world and has the depth of knowledge only experience can bring. Madge carries the world on her back - literally. Because somehow, as her shell developed over the centuries, the continents and oceans just seemed to etch themselves upon it - so now her shell is a world map, making her the largest Map Turtle in the world. And though she's hundreds of years old, she always makes sure to have her claws clipped and her glasses just "so."
-
Ick is a fish with a unique perspective from the water hole at the bottom of the Tree. Cantankerous and quick to take offence, he doesn't let his limited perspective keep him from being an expert on everything. He won't hesitate to tell you exactly what he thinks and present his theories as fact - even when he's not quite sure what he's talking about.
-
Oko A mischievous old monkey, Oko is a trickster who always shows up when least expected. Oko can be mysterious and grouchy but he also shares exotic stories and sly bits of wisdom with the others. A tai chi master, he carries an old walking stick that he can twirl from his feet to his hands and back again in the blink of an eye. He is frequently found training with his sensei, a fly.
-
Wartz Best friends with Smooch and Winslow, Wartz is a Red-Eyed Tree Frog. Wartz just wants to be everyone's friend and will twist himself into knots of obsequiousness to agree with all of his friends, even when they disagree. He's the guy who will laugh at your joke, then, when pressed, admit he didn't really understand it.
