Program Summary:
Fetch! explores the untapped potential of the hugely popular reality television genre and proves that it can be a great venue for kids to have fun while learning problem-solving skills and teamwork. The series also offers viewers an important perspective on competition by letting them know that the value of an experience isn't just determined by winning or losing, but by what happens along the way. Funded in large part by the National Science Foundation, the series focuses on real world science, featuring kids as they pursue questions, conduct experiments, and actively investigate the world around them. In addition, the series also has an extensive outreach initiative, designed to extend the impact of Fetch!'s science themes and give viewers a chance to play along with the show, even after the TV is turned off.
Fetch! airs weekdays on KNPB Fridays at 5:30pm.
Meet the Characters:
-
Ruff Ruffman is a dog who dreams big dreams — and not just because he sleeps a lot. After all, not every dog winds up hosting its own reality game show: it took vision, ambition, and a resume that conveniently didn't mention he was a dog. And now Ruff is where he was always destined to be — in over his head. But when the going gets tough, Ruff is always cool, calm, and collected...for about five seconds. The rest of the time he's managing one disaster after another with the serenity of a Chihuahua.
-
Anna As the oldest Fetch-er, Anna brings maturity and some amazing advanced math skills to the group. Her headstand is pretty darn good too! Anna is also a real animal lover — just ask her three-legged cat and her six chickens: Josephine, Kip, Penny, Beatrice, Edna, and Heather.
-
Brian is addicted to sports almost as much as he's addicted to hot chocolate. He even eats frozen hot chocolate in the summertime! Brian is passionate about lots of things: rock music, ice hockey, water balloon fights, and his dad's pancakes. He's less enthusiastic about dental visits and math tests.
-
Julia truly marches to the beat of her own drum; she's been drumming for the past five years. Despite her natural sense of rhythm, Julia admits she has "seven left feet" when it comes to dancing. Julia can do some fancy footwork though when playing hockey. But that's nothing compared to her 300-foot descent over a tropical rainforest. What a thrill-seeker!
-
Khalil You might not have guessed it, but Khalil is the youngest Fetch-er. That's probably because he has such sophisticated tastes; he enjoys exotic foods and admires Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey. Still, Khalil definitely knows how to have fun. He can beat-box, do Stitch impressions, and juggle!
-
Noah He might be an only child, but Noah probably has more cousins than all the Fetch-ers combined: thirty-three to be exact! Noah is full of surprises. He was homeschooled until the age of ten; he can do stunts on dirt bikes; and he wants to be a forest ranger. Next stop, learning to breakdance. He's all over the place!
-
Taylor You might recognize Taylor from her previous appearances on ZOOM. Taylor has a great sense of humor, an interest in predicting the future, and a knack for getting caught up in some pretty outrageous situations. Like camping outside with howling wolves! Still, she's human; she has a nervous cough and a serious weakness for shopping.
Available Workshops:
-
Examining the Clues:
Goals of this workshop include teaching children how to become young investigators. Children will learn how to decipher a number of practical clues to mysteries. In the process, participants will discover how listening, examining evidence and clues, and thought-process can lead to fun results. Participants will also learn how to use the “Learning Triangle.”
