During these uncertain economic times, KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting is dedicated to continuing the work we do to educate, enlighten, entertain and inform our community — reaching more than 200,000 viewers every week. With a clear understanding of mission and a strong strategic plan in place, KNPB serves our community with great television and rich multi-media support services. The generous support of our members are an important part of our efforts. Learn more about KNPB's 2009 services and activities... In the current economy, your support is more critical than ever. Like most non-profit organizations, KNPB is experiencing reduced revenues reflective of the state of the economy. As we approach the end of our fiscal year, we would welcome your additional gift so that we can continue the important service we provide to northern Nevada and eastern California. KNPB continues to offer high quality, informative, entertaining community services... Speaking of the economy, we are very aware of the effect all of us have been experiencing in changing media services. Some of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious news providers have closed their doors, creating a void too important to ignore. As part of the public broadcasting community, KNPB has added services to enhance local media news and to champion the role of quality journalism in helping all of us to understand this increasingly complex world we live in. Over the past year, producers Michael Hagerty and Elizabeth Welti have more than tripled our local news and public affairs productions, with OpenLine, A Conversation With..., and KNPB Reports, podcasts available online and shared with KUNR Reno Public Radio. Perhaps one of the most urgent and complex issues this year is that of healthcare, thus inspiring our KNPB outreach theme for this season: Understanding Health. With the help of our Community Advisory Board and our community partners in health and human services, we will develop opportunities for learning about the issues through our 2010 outreach activities. Equally important is our dedication to telling the stories of our communities using the most up-to-date production quality. I’m proud that we now are capable of producing in full high definition, with three new programs completed and a fourth currently being edited for release this fall. • Living in the Big Empty tells the stories of the people who live in rural communities along Route 50 across Nevada. • Reno Historic Races examines the values and the passion of the people who own the classic sports cars raced in this annual event • Legends of the Lake highlights the history of the wooden boats at Lake Tahoe’s Concours d-Elegance • Pylon Chasers documents the historic National Championship Air Races, premiering September 20, 2009. In other very exciting news, Ken Burns’ new series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea premiering on September 27, 2009, promises to be majestic! This new series celebrating America’s national parks is a 12-hour, six-part film that traces the origins and growth of the national parks system over 150 years. Of course, we hope to see you at our exciting upcoming events: • Preview KNPB’s newest HD production Pylon Chasers featuring the Reno Air Races. Scheduled for September 17. More • Enjoy KNPB’s 12th Annual Aged to Perfection events. October 13, Aged to Perfection Tribute dinner honors Reno philanthropist Bruno Benna. 2009 chairs are Gail and John Sande III and Mayor Bob and Nancy Cashell. Please call now to reserve your tickets or table. Reserve November 7 for the Aged to Perfection on-air wine and travel auction hosted again this year by Dr. Kosta Arger and Dr. Lynn Learey. More There are many reasons to celebrate KNPB! So as we approach the end of our 2009 fiscal year, please consider making an additional gift to the station. Return to the gift form... Once again, thank you for your support. We look forward to another year of service through this wonderful medium of public television.
