Spooner Lake
Grades 1-5

Students will discover what birds live around Spooner Lake and on which part of the lake the trees in which they live are growing. Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge
Grades 2-5

This lesson focuses on the birds and plants at the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge
Complex. We will visit the complex at least four times during the year. Students will observe and record data concerning the migration of birds. Since we will be going different times during the year they will take digital pictures of the birds, and take the temperature of the water and the temperature of the air. I want them to witness, which birds stay during what type of season. I am also going to have them study the different types of plants that are at the Complex during each time of year that we are there.

The ecosystem they will be studying will include the plants, animals, and insects, as well as, water organisms in both the river and the oxbow pond. The nature area is located on Dickerson Road along the Truckee River.

Lampe Park
Grades 1-5

This pond and stream unit and learning activities will emphasize the importance of ecology. An ecological balance must exist for the community to thrive. A pond or stream is a community of different plants, animal species, and organisms. This ecological unit will improve student awareness of the impact humans have upon pond and stream ecosystem. They will compare pond and streams and draw conclusions about the different ecological systems. Students will use dissolved oxygen kits to measure oxygen levels, and digital photographs as a visual tool to go with their scientific information.
